Construction Methods

Part 1 - Production

I.     Manufacturer

A.  Custom line full overlay casework finished with high pressure plastic laminate or hardwood veneer by Burgener’s Woodworking, Inc., Vancouver, Washington

II.   Materials

A.  Plastic Laminates: Meet appropriate NEMA standards for referenced grades.

1.    Exterior exposed cabinet faces: High pressure plastic laminate 0.030 inch thickness available in full range of solid color, woodgrains, and patterns.

2.    Interior exposed: High pressure plastic laminate 0.030 inch thickness, finished to match exposed cabinet faces.

3.    Semi exposed or exterior unexposed surfaces: Minimum 0.020 inch thickness, low pressure plastic laminate in almond, gray, black or white. Designed to assure structural balance of the panel.

4.    Countertops:

i.        Standard horizontal grade 0.050 inch thickness for all general purpose work. Available in full range of solid colors, woodgrains, and patterns in matte or satin finishes.

ii.      Post-forming grade 0.042 inch thickness for coved countertops and where forming is required. Available in full range of solid colors, woodgrains, and patterns in matte or satin finishes. Designed to be formed under controlled heat and pressure.

iii.    All countertops backed with white undercoating on underside of core to provide a moisture-proof and stable countertop.

iv.    Optional customer specified countertops (phenolic, solid surface, granite, veneer)

B.   Pre-finished MDF: 1/4 inch Medium Density Fiberboard. Factory melamine or polyester resin overlay in almond, gray, black or white color (optional hardwood plywood or plastic laminate). Designed for cabinet backs and drawer bottoms.

C.   PVC Edge Banding: Impact-resistant PVC edge banding machine-applied with hot-melt adhesive.

1.    Standard 0.020 inch thick edge available in many Formica, Wilsonart, Nevamar and Pionite solid colors and patterns, at doors, drawer fronts, shelves and vertical case ends. (Availability limited to PVC manufacturer’s stock offering. See cross reference guides.)

2.    Optional 2mm or 3mm PVC to match laminate colors and patterns (Availability limited to PVC manufacturer’s stock offering. See cross reference guides.)

3.    Optional customer specified edge (laminate, veneer, solid wood or polymer)

D.  Particleboard: Premium industrial board of balanced construction. Density of 45 lbs. per cubic foot with moisture content of 8 percent or less.

E.   Pre-finished Melamine: Low pressure laminate over 1/2 inch particle board core. Factory melamine or polyester resin overlay in almond, gray, black, or white color. Used for drawer sides.

III.     Fabrication

A.  Cabinet Construction:

1.    Blind dado joinery assembled with standard adhesive and fasteners.   Inline boring for fastening of European hardware and 32mm system holes.

B.   Bases (toekicks):

1.    Shop option. Bases installed in continuous lengths where possible, to insure straight, level, and true lines of casework.

2.    Optional exterior grade 3/4 inch plywood base.

C.   Standard Countertops:

1.    High pressure plastic laminate, either 0.050 inch general purpose or 0.042 inch post-forming grade, bonded to 3/4 inch 45 pound density particle board. Backed with a balance sheet. Optional substrate of moisture resistant particle board or exterior plywood may be specified at sinks and other tops subject to extreme moisture. Self-edged with 0.050 inch laminate. Optional owner specified edge. Back splashes of same construction as tops, using 3/4 inch moisture resistant particleboard.

2.    Wire management grommets are installed above electrical or data receptacles or at 36 inch centers at knee space areas.

D.  Cabinet Tops and Bottoms:

1.    3/4 inch particleboard overlaid with almond, gray, black or white low pressure plastic laminate on both sides. Exposed edges trimmed with impact resistant PVC.

E.   Cabinet Ends:

1.    3/4 inch particleboard, interior face overlaid with almond, black, gray or white low pressure laminate. Exposed exterior face covered with vertical grade high pressure plastic laminate in full range of solid colors, woodgrains, and patterns. Exposed edges trimmed with impact resistant PVC. Holes drilled for 5mm shelf clips for adjustable shelves.

F.    Fixed and Adjustable Shelves:

1.    Standard Shelves: 3/4 inch particleboard for shelves up to 32 inches, 1 inch thick over 32 inches wide. Shelves overlaid with gray, black, almond or white low pressure plastic laminate and exposed edges trimmed with impact resistant PVC. Number of adjustable shelves provided unless noted otherwise:

i.        Low and Tall Storage:

i.      1 shelf - up to 36” high

ii.    2 shelves - up to 48” high

iii.  3 shelves - up to 60” high

iv.  4 shelves - up to 72” high

v.    5 shelves - up to 84” high

vi.  6 shelves - up to 96” high

ii.      Upper Storage:

i.      0 shelves - up to 24” high

ii.    1 shelf - up to 30” high

iii.  2 shelves - up to 36” high

iv.  3 shelves - up to 40” high

G.  Heavy Duty Utility Shelves:

1.    1 inch particleboard overlaid with gray, black, almond or white color low pressure plastic laminate. Exposed edges of PVC are standard.

2.    Hardboard Shelves: 1/4 inch oil impregnated, tempered brown hardboard, finished both sides. Appropriate for tote-tray and cubicle storage shelves.

3.    Open Shelves for Wall Mounted Standards: 3/4 inch particleboard overlaid with gray, black, almond or white low pressure plastic laminate and all edges trimmed with impact resistant PVC. Optional overlay of vertical grade high pressure plastic laminate in full range of solid colors, woodgrains, and patterns.

H.  Cabinet Backs:

1.    Standard Backs: 1/4 inch MDF melamine. Pre-finished gray, black, almond or white color low pressure laminate.

2.    Exposed Backs: 3/4 inch particleboard. Interior face overlaid with gray, black, almond or white color low pressure plastic laminate. Exterior face covered with high pressure plastic laminate in full range of solid colors, woodgrains, and patterns.

3.    Upper Cabinet Backs: 1/4 inch MDF melamine. Pre-finished gray, black, almond or white color low pressure laminate.

4.    Cabinet Back Nailer:  1/2 inch low and tall wall hung cabinets supported with 1/2 inch French cleat.

I.     Cabinet Doors:

1.    3/4 inch Thick Overlay Slab Laminate Doors:

i.        Particleboard overlaid on interior face with gray, black, almond or white high pressure plastic laminate. Exterior face overlaid with high pressure plastic laminate in full range of solid colors, woodgrains, and patterns. Edges trimmed with impact resistant PVC.

2.    3/4 inch Thick Overlay Slab Veneer Doors:

i.        Particleboard overlaid with select wood veneer. Edges trimmed with woodtape edgebanding.

3.    3/4 inch Thick Stile and Rail Doors:

i.        Standard flush overlay door with molded hardwood stiles and rails fitted with 1/4 tempered glass or 1/4 inch veneer insert. Optional hardwood stop.

J.     Drawers:

1.    Front of 3/4 inch particleboard. Interior face overlaid with gray, black, almond or white color low pressure plastic laminate and exterior face overlaid with high pressure plastic laminate in full range of solid colors, matched woodgrains, or patterns. Edges trimmed with impact resistant PVC. Sides of 1/2 inch gray, black, almond or white melamine with top edges trimmed with matching PVC. Sub-front and back of 1/2 inch gray, black, almond or white melamine with top edges trimmed with matching PVC. Sub-front and back fitted into sides with rabbet joints. Bottoms of pre-finished gray, black, almond or white 1/4 inch MDF let into sides with continuous groove. Drawers mounted on roller guides and silenced with rubber bumpers. See hardware specifications for roller guide types. Concealed dividers 3/4 inch thick between each drawer where required for locking, to stabilize construction.


Part 2

II.   Execution

A.  Field Measuring:

1.    Critical measurements verified at jobsite by this contractor to insure accurate fit of casework and countertops.

B.   Installation:

1.    Installation to proceed upon completion of preliminary work done by other trades. Casework installed by factory trained personnel to insure accurate, true, and level placement. Bases secured to floor structure. Cases secured to wall structure. Countertops secured to cases. Cases and countertops scribed to adjacent walls and finished surfaces.

C.   Adjusting, Cleaning:

1.    Hardware adjusted for proper fit and function. Casework and adjacent areas left clean and free of installation debris. Wood trim and wood veneer casework finished in modern spray booth.
